授業の目的
本講座はの目的は、科学英語のリスニング能力向上を手助けすることにあり、指導教員との授業、あるいは各自、各学生の学習進度と都合に合わせて行われる。

Course outline
In the course, students practice listening based on scientific podcasts available on the internet. Typical podcast topics include plant and animal biotechnology, drug development, diseases and public health, environmental chemicals, as well as video lectures of MIT biochemistry lectures.

Each week, the instructor holds an optional class meeting in which students listen to selected podcasts using specially-developed support materials. Students who prefer to study alone at their own pace outside of the classroom can also complete the course by downloading the materials used in class from the course homepage. Students are provided with iPods for listening practice.

Evaluation is based on completion of the weekly supporting materials provided by the instructor. Students can earn additional points by freely choosing other podcasts and making a short summary of them.

The instructor carries out the class in English, and encourages students to speak English as well. However, as speaking is not an essential component of a listening class, students who feel more comfortable speaking Japanese may do so. For this reason, the class is a good opportunity for students who lack confidence in their English speaking skills to ease themselves into English studies gradually, before taking courses such as Oral Communication in which they are expected to speak English as much as possible.

授業計画
本科目では、学生はインターネット上で利用できるサイエンスポッドキャストをダウンロードしてリスニングの練習をする。ポッドキャストの内容は、植物/動物バイオテクノロジー、薬剤開発、病気と公衆衛生、環境化学、等を予定している。加えて、MITのバイオケミストリーのビデオ講義も利用可能である。

毎週、指導教員は選択授業を設ける。学生は特別に作成された資料を使用したポッドキャストを聞く。各自の学習進度で勉強したい学生は、ホームページから授業で使用される資料をダウンロードし、科目を修了することもできる。リスニングの練習のためにiPodが貸与される。

評価は毎週の課題によって行われる。その他、学生は各自が選択したポッドキャストについて簡単な要旨を作成すれば、評価ポイントが加算される。

授業は英語で行われ、学生の英語使用を奨励する。しかしスピーキングは重要要素ではないので、日本語を使用したい学生は使用してよい。よって、本授業は、出来る限り英語を話すことが要求されるオーラル・コミュニケーションのような授業を履修する前に、スピーキングに自信がない学生にとって徐々に英語を学習するためには良い機会となる。　

Course requirements
There are no prerequisites for the course. Both Doctoral and Master’s Degree students are welcome to participate.
